Winter Outing

To those new Obsidians unfamiliar with much of the history of our club, it might be of interest to know more about some of our "traditional events". The first Annual Winter Outing was held in the Bohemia Mountains, in February of 1937. Apparently, from the press accounts, it was a well planned affair. Quoting from an article by Glen Sims, it was held "Feb. 13-21, during a full moon. Headquarters at the boarding house of Champion Mine; food and other supplies taken and stored before snow fall." Later accounts dwell with great enthusiasm on the outing which apparently was a rugged affair.

In 1938 and 1939, the outing was held at Mt. Hood; in 1940, on the Santiam.

This year will find the Obsidians once more enjoying the wonderful scenery and skiing of the Santiam pass country. Here is the story of this years s Winter Outing, direct from the Committee:

"We're off to Suttle Lake Lodge for a glorious 5 days in the snow, March 22 to 26. This picturesque winter lodge, situated on Suttle Lake -- 8 miles beyond Santiam Summit, offers a world of opportunity to skiers, with lots of terrain for cross country trips, and trail riding.

The cost of the outing depends upon the number of participants, but the committee figures it at around $3.80 per day for those who attend the whole time, and a little more than $4 per day for those attending one or two days. The special rate offered by Lyle Baker, manager of the Lodge, is for dormitory type accommodations (bedding furnished) including 3 meals a day.

Days will be spent skiing - probably in Hoodoo Bowl, where tows will be operating --with one or two cross country trips for which this area provides endless possibilities. Evenings will be full of fun - with folk dancing -- singing -- picture shows, etc.

A sign-up sheet is posted at Hendershott's; be sure to indicate, when you sign up, length of stay you plan, address, telephone, whether you wish transportation. The committee will need this information as soon as possible.

This may seem a little early in the season to discuss Summer Outing. But if you enjoy giving rein to your escapist instinct, you will like thinking over the announcement, made at the last board meeting by President Ray that Roy Temple is to be chairman of the Summer Outing project, and that both Roy and the Board were agreed that the Outing this summer, would be in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming. Going to this area has been a favorite topic of planning by various Obsidians, for a long time, and many persons have offered assistance in arranging such an outing. Those who have been there declare the scenery is unrivaled. If the scenery isn't enough attraction to induce you to make the long trek to Wyoming this final announcement will -- Edna will cook!

Details about the Summer Camp will appear in later issues of the Obsidian.
