Trip Report

Our very small group left the South Eugene parking lot at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. A brunch stop in Oakridge, complete with lots of hot coffee and optimism, helped us face the prospect of a wet weekend. We were on the Pioneer Gulch Trail by 1:30 p.m. accompanied by scattered showers and hungry mosquitoes. After setting up camp on the SW ridge, we took a hike down the Corrigan Lake trail to see if we could get a glimpse of the lake. We lost the trail several times under snow patches, but finally succeeded in finding the lake (thanks to Lee). After a snack of lefse (thanks to Christine) we headed back to camp for dinner and an early retirement. It rained most of the night.

The next morning was damp and dismal. We started up the ridge at 7:00 a.m. The clouds rolled in at about the 6500 foot level, so visibility was poor. Undaunted, we reached the summit at about 9:40 and stayed there until 9:45. Wet and cold, we headed quickly down the mountain. At timberline we met a friend, John Mowat, on his way up. We all joked about our timing and the weather. It started to clear just a bit as we arrived in camp.

With our short climb complete, we had plenty of time to sit in Manning's in Oakridge telling stories and drinking coffee. We were home by 4:00 p.m., damp but happy. The climbers and coffee drinkers were Lee Hatch, Christine Ligneau and leader Mary Ellen de la Pena.
