Trip Report

On Sept. 15 eighteen Obsidians and 14 guests of members enjoyed a bus and boat trip. We left South Eugene Hi parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and returned at 7:00 p.m. During the first part of the bus ride the trip leader reviewed Oregon history events.

The first stop was at the historical museum in Champoeg Park. Here we viewed an interesting film "Steamboating on the Willamette River." It was made by Portland Community College. After viewing the exhibits of the historic Champoeg meeting we continued on by bus to Cascade Locks.

We arrived at noon and enjoyed our sack lunch in the park in the sunshine. At 1:00 p.m. we boarded the "Columbia Sightseer". We cruised up river several miles, crossed the Columbia River and came down the Washington side to the head of Bonneville Dam. From here we returned to Cascade Locks after a pleasant 2½ hour cruise. Throughout the boat trip a narrated commentary presented historical and geological facts. Enroute back to Eugene we stopped in Salem at Denny's for coffee, then returned to Eugene at 7:00 p.m.
