Trip Report

April 6 was a beautiful bright day of sunshine after weeks of rain and gray Cloudy skies. Fourteen Obsidians and seven nonmembers left South Eugene High Parking lot for a fine day on the Oregon Coast. Enroute we made a rest stop at Gingerbread House where coffee and gingerbread were available.

The first stop of the trip was at the Sea Lion Caves. The 1500 ft main cavern had some 300 Stellar Sea Lions and their pups on the rocks. This is the only mainland breeding site on the Pacific Coast for these sea lions.

We drove to Strawberry Hill Wayside for our sack lunch stop. The warm sunshine was thoroughly enjoyed. After lunch we drove to Cape Perpetua overlook for a breathtaking view of the Oregon Coast. We then drove back south to visit Heceta Head Light House. We stopped at Devil's Elbow State Park where part of the group remained to enjoy the sunshine on the beach; part of the group hiked up the hill to the Heceta Head Light House; and the remainder of the group rode on the bus to the Light House Keeper's House (now a Lane Community College Conference Center) and hiked on up to the Light House which has been flashing its powerful beams over the Pacific ocean since 1894. Our last stop of the day was at the Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside to view the Cobra lilies. The trip was an exciting beautiful Spring day experience.

Our trip was made in a comfortable 24 passenger Coast Line Bus. This has recently been started by John McCaffery on a weekly route between Eugene and Florence. McCaffery drove our bus. Because he has wide experience as a naturalist this added to our enjoyment. He provided the services of two very knowledgeable guides, Stewart and Jenifer Warren.

Coast enjoyers were Marie Carstensen, Sophie Christopher, Elois Cobban, Wilma Downie, Marion Fulkerson, Florence Givans, Emily Gropp, Laura Hayes, Maxine Hayes, Vera Heidenreich, Jane Hilt, Lelia Lee, Charlotte Lemon, Frances Newsom, Daisie Niccolls, Sybil Pickering, Winona Sellard, Grace Smith, Myrtle Smith, Betty Mae Stamm, Edrie Stewart and leader Jennelle Moorhead.
