Trip Report

Spring days opening up the scope for trail maintenance possibilities, Wednesday's group ventured up the McKenzie, and with Steve Otoupalik (the District's Recreation Supervisor) a most satisfying renovation was made to a McKenzie River Trail creek crossing washed out by previous high waters a half mile below Carmen Reservoir.

A 12-foot section of 24" steel culvert was man-handled to the crossing. Blow-down along the way was soon cleared by the Trail Committees' trusty 16" Poulan. The smaller, blocked sections of pipe were removed from the mud, and after much rock carrying, extensive masonry placement and some backwoods carpentry, a new, solid, elevated stream crossing appeared.

Unexpected but welcome visitors to the work site were McKenzie District Ranger Randy Dunbar and Willamette National Forest Supervisor Mike Kerrick.

"Culverteers" were Pete Cecil, Fred Schepman, Marshall Pallett, Mike Wright and John Cecil, leader.
