Trip Report

A clear summer night greeted three of the Three Fingered Jack group at the 19th and Patterson parking lot at 4 a.m. We picked up one person on the way out of town and then met the rest of the group at the trailhead at 6 a.m. At 6:20 a.m. we were ready and headed up the PCT. The morning was beautifully clear and crisp providing outstanding views of Washington, the Sisters, etc. as the sun rose, and before long we got our first view of Three Fingered Jack.

As we neared the summit ridge a cool, brisk wind kept us moving right along. Remnants of snow from the July 4th storm were encountered as we got higher. When we reached the "crawl", assistant leader Rick Ahrens led and set the fixed line, and as the last of the party was negotiating this traverse, he also established the belay on the summit pinnacle and belayed the party up.

All climbers had summited by noon after which they had a leisurely lunch at or near the top while enjoying the views of Jefferson, Hood, St. Helens as well as all the peaks to the south.

We reluctantly headed back down about 2 p.m. A quick scree hop and we were on the PCT again and by 5:30 we were back at the cars. All agreed this had been a particularly nice day on Three Fingered Jack.

Climbers were Rick Ahrens, Brian Barber, Wendy Boyd, Tom Cawi, Lyle Jacobsen, Susan Mickel and leader John Jacobsen.
