Trip Report

After a leisurely drive to Timberline and a short nap, we were up and on our way by 1:30 a.m. The skies were mostly clear with a slight wind. The temperature felt warm while walking but very cold if resting for more than a few minutes. We kept up a brisk pace to the Hogsback and arrived there by 7:00 in deteriorating visibility. After a chilly rest we roped up and pushed on into the fog, not knowing what to expect at the bergscrund. The crevasse turned out to be very open, 50-60' deep and up to 10' wide. Although it was impressive to view, there was a wide, solid snow bridge that was no trouble to cross. We all summitted by 8:00, to find clearing skies but stinging winds! We rested on the way back down on a now sunny and warming Hogsback, and then glissaded the majority of the way back. It was excellent sliding snow, and we arrived back at the cars by noon. This was a good climb, the first time on top for the majority. On Mt. Hood were Jan and Rich Anselmo, Wendy Boyd, Michael Cooper, Linda Erz, Fred Mallory, Jim Russell, Wendy Williams, Tom Donnelly (asst. leader) and Rick Ahrens (leader).
