Trip Report

The Sitkum Glacier route on Glacier Peak is a pleasant climb that I highly recommend to any Obsidian who is tired of the standard route climbs in the Oregon Cascades. On June 23rd our group of three drove from Eugene and hiked to a base camp at about 5,500feet. The walk in was pleasant even though our small group managed to become separated from the leader. From camp we had clear views of the White Chuck River and the surrounding foothills. No tents were used as we spent a balmy evening staring at the stars and protecting our food from the attack-marmots.

About 6:00 a.m. the next morning we began the trudge to the summit. The conditions were ideal and we didn't rope-up or use crampons. After five hours of climbing we arrived at the summit (10,528 feet), took a 30-minute lunch break, and enjoyed the splendor of the North Cascades. We descended to base camp in less than an hour, lounged around for the rest of the day, and hiked out the next morning.

A good climb and good companions - Joe Turner, Michael Cooper, Sam Miller (leader) - made the long trip back to Eugene bearable.
