Trip Report

The group came together around 0745 at the Summit Lake Campground. After the usual introductions, a few "remember whens", and a thorough dousing with mosquito repellant, we hit the Pacific Crest Trail. At the junction of the Marie Lake Trail, after an hour or so of hiking, we began a diagonal ascent which eventually brought us to the snow fields on the south approach. The snow was soft and very suitable for kicking steps. It was also plentiful, which allowed us to miss much of the scree and the boulders common to summer climbs. With an easy but steady pace we made the summit in 4¼; hours. A cool wind but a sunny sky overhead and a good view made the forty minute lunch break go quickly.

The soft snow made the return just great for plunge stepping but poor for glissading - no one complained though. The trip back included a short stop at Marie Lake, some bushwhacking over to the Pacific Crest Trail, and an uneventful hike back to Summit Lake.

Diamond climbers were Aleta Carte, Bea Fontana, Dallas Hemphill, Steve John, Ken Reiser, Gene Thaxton and leader Bud Proctor.
