Trip Report

The five McLoughlin trekkers met near the McLoughlin Trailhead on Friday evening prior to the Saturday climb. At 7:00 a.m. the next morning the group proceeded to hike the well-marked trail upwards towards the summit and enjoyed boulder hopping for the last few hundred vertical feet. The day was ideal for climbing as the sun was shining, winds were calm and temperature was moderate. Distant forest fires did limit visibility to a certain extent, however views extended to Mt. Shasta to the south, Diamond Peak to the north and Gearhart Mountain to the east. The group found that the four hour trip from trailhead-to-peak average noted throughout the summit book was quite accurate. The route was very busy with climbers of all shapes and ages roving erratically towards the top. As might be expected for this comparatively basic climb, we did witness one climbing K-9 painstakingly follow his master from rock to rock eventually reaching the summit. It was obvious this dog was hoping McLoughlin could be his last climb. The leader of this Obsidian climb who had not been on the mountain since 1975 was very encouraged to notice that the litter and unnecessary spray paint marks along the route no longer existed and the route up McLoughlin was once again a "wilderness experience." This beautiful day was shared by five Obsidian climbers: Jeremy Adams, Bob and Naomi Emmich, Julie Stubbs and Ken Ball (leader).
