Trip Report

At 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning just below the northwest ridge of Broken Top it was 19 degrees. We had been moving for about half-an-hour. We all knew it had been cold Friday night … containers left out with water in them were frozen solid; the stream that flows from the spring to Green Lakes had a thick icy crust along its banks. The group guessed that it was somewhere between 10-15 degrees Friday night. It was very cold and no one was anxious to get out of their bags Saturday morning. The climb itself was uneventful. Clear skies, moderate breeze and great views. Bill Bankston set the belay line and did the belaying. I did note that it was warmer on top of this mountain than anywhere else we had been in the last 18 hours. On Broken Top were Bill Bankston, Gene Thaxton, Tom Woxell and Jane Hackett (leader).
