Trip Report

An interesting, educational trip was taken by 22 Obsidian members and 8 nonmembers April 11 to Salem, leaving at 8:00 a.m., returning at 5 p.m. The morning was spent at the State Capitol where Representative Larry Campbell had arranged a very interesting tour of the Capitol, a visit to the House of Representatives and the State Senate. Sack lunches were eaten in the Republican caucus room where Larry Campbell joined us, answered questions, and spoke about a number of important issues. The group went to the "Mission Village" after lunch where we visited the Thomas Kay Woolen Museum. The woolen mill was first established in 1889. Historic houses visited were: Jason Lee House (1841), the oldest remaining frame house in the Pacific Northwest; the Methodist Parsonage, 1841, which was the meeting place for the Methodist founders of the Willamette University; and the John D. Boon Home, 1847. The final stop of the afternoon was at the Marion County Museum where Daniel McElhinny, Director, gave us an interesting talk about the Kalapuya Indians.

Bus riders were Annette Aylvorth, Evart and Margaret Baldvin, Rita Baxter, Carlene Beck, Ingrid and Tom Carmichael, Jeannette Daletas, Virginia DeMers, Bill and Marjorie Eaton, Ardis Ebbighausen, Bette Hack, Dorothy Hayes, Jane Hilt, Harriet and Vernon Kerley, Betty Lindley, Frances Newsom, Lillian Price, Mary Ross, Myrtle Sagen, Clarence and Dorothy Scherer, Grace Smith, Lila Smith, Mildred Weatherby and Mary Mallery (leader).
