Trip Report
On a sunny Monday, 8:00 a.m., twenty-one Obsidians and ten guests left S.E.H.S. parking lot for a no-host luncheon at Salishan, Oregon's only ***** Resort. Our coach left Hwy. 99 at Monroe, turned west to Alpine, then north to Philomath. This is a seldom travelled, good country road through fertile farmland. Our road turned west on Hwy. 20 and we stopped at Ellmaker Park for coffee and donuts. We continued to Toledo and followed the Siletz River to the ocean at Gleneden.
Ken Kesey's book, "Sometimes a Great Notion," starring the late Henry Fonda, vividly portrays this tidal river area, and the movie set has been remodeled into a large house. The winding, picturesque road passes through woods, ferns, and occasionally opens onto farms. With the exception of one ugly, old slash, there were miles of excellent reforestation. Two bridges being widened were well controlled and safe.
We arrived at Salishan, a 752-acre complex, shortly before noon, giving us time to explore the main lodge, dining rooms, lounge, gift shop, and a view of the 18-hole golf course. Lunch was reserved at the Market Place Restaurant which has a view of the bay. After lunch we visited the twenty-three diverse shops in the Market Place. Two and a half hours passed quickly.
Our return was via the coast highway, accompanied with blue skyblue water, and a calm sea. We stopped at a few view spots, Boiler Bay, Otter Crest, Boiling Pot, and a rest stop at the Newport Park overlooking the bay. Cape Foulweather was omitted due to a prohibitive 3 ton bridge limit (our bus is 33,000 lbs.) and we lacked time to back track.
We turned home at Florence: Bill Eaton discussed possible future trips, told a few jokes, and arrive at S.E.H.S. parking lot a few minutes after 6:00 p.m. Bus travelers were Muriel Aufderheide, Lois Baker, Bernice Ballaine, Ingrid Carmichael, Hilda Downer, Bill and Marge Eaton, Minnie Foskett, Bette Hack, Miki Hutchison, Roz Jacobsen, Lillian Johnson, Virginia Kapsa, Harriet and Vernon Kerley, Helen Knowlton, Jennelle Moorhead, Jeanne Rhoda, Bonnie Rickard, Myrtle Sagen, Grace Smith, Ethel and Robin Steussy, Mildred Weatherby, Lorene Williams and leaders Rita Baxter and Frances Newsom.
