Trip Report

It is seldom that a trip leader writes about a climb he did not make. But from the feedback I got afterwards, I feel enough excitement to tell the tale. (I did not actually make the climb because I took a climber who became ill in the parking lot at Timberline Lodge down off the mountain.) The climb was led by Tom Donnelly, Sue Sullivan, and Jan & Rich Anselmo, so there was no lack of leadership. On the mountain under a full moon, the group of 17 climbers many recent graduates of the Climb School - ascended to the Hogsback without incident. Because of the bottleneck of other climbers, the group took the West Crater Rim Route, a particularly satisfying route in good weather because of the view down the north side of the summit rim. There was some ice fall, but everyone successfully made the summit. Conditions on top were ideal and for those whose first ascent this was, this was a terrific experience.
