Trip Report

On Thursday, July 27 we journeyed to the Joe Goddard Old Growth Grove located in Black Creek Canyon. This remnant of the old growth forest is magnificent, with some Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir over 9 ft. in diameter. We doubled back on Hwy. 24, stopping at Salmon Creek Falls, then had lunch on the grounds (literally) of the Willamette Fish Hatchery, where resident manager Dave gave a brief talk and a partial tour of the large facility. The sturgeon were the featured attraction, but most of the fishery work involves salmon and trout restoration. We took the scenic route home, following Aufderheide Drive, which included a stop at the Gorge and a walk through Constitution Grove. The North Fork and then Roaring River were very beautiful. And finally, good pie but terrible service! - at Mom’s Pies near Blue River. Most of our 200 miles were over narrow, winding roads, driven very competently and safely by Wayne Coker.

Seven guests (Ethel Allen, Glendora Burbank, Jan Hillyer, Grace Miller, Mary Stanford, Tom Taylor and Hazel Turner) along with 23 Obsidians (Rita Baxter, Mary Jane Battin, John & Marian Borchardt, Ingrid Carmichael, Mary Lee Cheadle, Paul & Harriet Civin, Clair Cooley, Bill Eaton, Margaret Fea, Evelyn Hile, Dodie Leppmann, Mary McLaughlin, John & Lenore McManigal, Harvey & Betty Speck, Millard Thomas, Louise Thurber, Marjorie Townes, Dorothy Turner and trip leader Ray Jensen) enjoyed a very nice day in the Cascades.
