Trip Report

One Florence resident and six from Portland joined with five from Eugene-Springfield for a trip to the top of South Sister. Saturday evening was clear and cool for the camp at Devil’s Lake and the stars were bright when we rose well before the sun to begin our hike. The climbers’ trail gains elevation quickly as it follows the Hell Creek drainage up the mountain. One hiker opted to spend the day relaxing and enjoying the lovely plateau area above Moraine Lake. The rest of us pressed on with our steep, strenuous hike through the beautiful alpine terrain, enjoying ever widening vistas of the central Oregon Cascades and reaching the crater rim about five and a half hours after leaving camp. There was a cool breeze on top demanding sweaters and jackets but the sky was brilliant blue and the view tremendous. We had ample time to relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch on the summit before heading back down. The hike down was uneventful. We joined our last hiker and returned to the cars, tired but elated from a fine day of good company and appreciation for the beauty of the mountains. Hikers were Dan Carter, Barry & Melody Finnemore, Eric Gomer, Peter Howison, Chris & Max Key, Karl & Melinda Kriegh, Ivan Nelson and Doug Nelson, leader.
