Trip Report

We went south via Coos Bay and Bandon, ate lunch on the beach loop, and after a brief side trip to Cape Blanco continued on to Eureka. Before spending the night there we visited the ornate Carson House.

Next morning we started across the winding and remote road to Weaverville, where we viewed the hydraulic mining debris, the Chinese Joss House and the very interesting museum. We ate lunch and dessert at one of the local restaurants. Then on to Lewiston, stopping at the old general store that was also a museum. We then traveled north on Hwy. 3 to Scott Mountain summit after following the Trinity River. Descending to Etna in green Scott Valley, we visited the old store and heard about early history of the area. We could see the Marble Mountains to the west as we traveled through Fort Jones to Yreka, where we spent the night.

On the third morning we departed with beautiful weather and crossed over to Oregon along 1-5. We took the scenic route through Ashland and on to Medford before taking to I-5. We had a cookie and pit stop just west of Grants Pass then went via Merlin to Hells Gate where we paused for a while before going up Galice Creek and the road over Bear Camp. There we found a detour on the Snout Creek Road to Agness. We ate lunch at the new Agness Store (across the river from the original Agness). We encountered two detours in going north to Powers, but Lee Cayser - our skillful and very agreeable driver was able to meet all challenges, and we owe him a debt of gratitude for getting us through. We stopped at the Powers City Park for a rest stop and then on to Hwy. 42 to Roseburg and home. Being late, we went by Rice Hill without stopping!

Many people contributed to the success of this trip: Ethel Allen scouted the trip in Northern California, and she and her brother (Orval Etter) showed us their home area at Weaverville and Lewiston when they were young.
