Trip Report

The Husband is a craggy peak that rises to 7,524 ft. just four miles to the north-west of South Sister. We approached the peak from the Foley Ridge Trailhead. The trail is well graded and passes through mixed old-growth forest. After passing the rocky saddle between Proxy Point and Substitute Point, the trail passes several small ponds. Near the ponds, we left the trail and hiked cross-country up a gully. We used a G.P.S. unit to navigate the short distance up to a small pond on a ridge of the Husband. We camped near a pond, about seven miles from the trailhead. Our climb on Sunday morning was pure fun. A short hike led to a short, steep snow patch, which led to a rope-length of easy rock climbing. It took only two hours to make the summit, where we basked in sunshine and took many photographs. The hike back down Foley Ridge was quick and uneventful. We were back to the trailhead by 3:00, and were home by dinner time. Joining me (Brian Hoyland, leader) for this memorable weekend were my friends Doug Nelson and Susan Sullivan.
