Trip Report

We drove from Eugene to the trailhead for Diamond Peak at Summit Lake, arriving about 9:00 am. The weather was cloudy and cold with heavy white caps on Summit Lake. We started out at 9:15 and had a good 3.5-mile hike through the woods on the PCNST for a 1200-ft. gain. At about 11:15 we headed up the mountain on the southwest ridge for the false summit. A half mile later at around noon on the ridge at about 7400 ft. we were exposed to 15 knot headwinds and a 37° temperature. With the wind chill going to be below freezing at the summit with poor visibility, the entire group decided we would summit another day. We downclimbed and broke for lunch at 12:30, with some sun to warm us a bit. Dejected, but not broken, the group said they would like to try again next summer, but perhaps a little sooner than late September. Participants were Karen Edelman, Jack & Pam Fendrich, Marji McGeehan, Dewayne, Lee & Peggy Peters, Val Russell, Kathy Snyder, Alice Tallmadge and Obsidians Dave Becker, Christine & Truman Grandy, Van Like, Karen Myers and leader Dick Snyder.
