Trip Report

Departing Eugene at 8:00 am, we traveled to Greenwaters Park in Oakridge for our coffee break. On to the Willamette Fish Hatchery to view the 8-ft. sturgeon and enjoy the very nice small museum, which includes a warm water aquarium. We used the High Prairie back road to Westfir where we examined the historic covered bridge. We then followed the Aufderheide By-Way: highlights were the Gorge, a walk through Constitution Grove. Box Canyon and Roaring River. We lunched in bright sunshine at Cougar Dam itself. In the atternoon, we stopped at the McKenzie Ranger Station, then on to Koosah and Sahalie Falls where there was some nice color. We then backtracked to the Rustic Skillet for pie and coffee. Larry Edwards, driver for Oregon Coachways, handled the challenge of wet, twisty roads in excellent fashion, returning us home by 5:30 pm. We had a very nice day in the Cascades: some rain, limited fall color at the higher elevations.
