Trip Report

This, our first trip of the season, was fantastic. The weather was perfect for a trek through the zoo. Most animals were out and some, like the polar bears, were really showing off. The new North Cascades exhibit near the entrance was great. The big new ocean-sea life exhibit promises to be wonderful when completed. Everyone found a place for lunch. In the afternoon we went to the Portland Art Museum’s "Down from the Shimmering Sky: Masks of the Northwest Coast". It is the U.S. premiere of this powerful exhibition of ceremonial masks. Killer whales, wolves, birds, mythical creatures, celestial beings and tribal ancestors came to life. A salmon turns into a god’s face. The sun and moon descend from the sky world and assume breathtaking forms. Historic masks (150 years old) were displayed side-by-side with contemporary works. The exhibition reveals a rich, artistic continuum of theme and tradition. Very worthwhile.
