Trip Report

We left Valley River Center right on time at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9 and headed south through Cottage Grove, Drain, Elkton, and Scottsburg with nice views of the Umpqua River. We stopped for our rest stop about 17 miles from Reedsport at a very nice county wayside park along the river. Coffee, cookies, crackers and cheese were consumed courtesy of the leader, Rosella Jones and Ethel Allen. Leaving the park, we encountered roadwork which delayed us somewhat but gave us a chance to view the elk. There were several herds resting in the grass. We arrived at the Umpqua Lighthouse about 10:30 and found the tour leader who apparently is a man of all trades as he was doing janitor work and needed to change into his tour leader clothes. We drove back a short distance to the gift shop which is very unique and full of nothing but lighthouse material. They also had the lighthouse passports which call for stamps at each lighthouse visited (the holder becomes a member of the United States Lighthouse Society). After a short time, our tour leader took several groups to the top of the lighthouse with 65 steps to reach the top. We left the area and arrived at Lovejoys at the Pier Point Inn in Florence at 1:00 p.m. for lunch. The service was slow but eventually all had a delicious lunch with an English flair overlooking the bridge and bay. We drove up the coast and arrived at Heceta Head Innkeeper’s Cottage about 3:30 (now a bed & breakfast). We were given a tour of the cottage and an interesting talk about the history of the lighthouse by Carol (caretaker of the B.&B.). One group walked to the lighthouse while another had the tour. Our time was getting short and we left about 4:30, heading for Newport but just did a drive-by of the Yaquina Lighthouse and then headed for home. The weather at the coast was foggy but warm with no wind. We stopped at Avery Park in Corvallis and arrived home late, but all agreed it had been a great trip at the coast.

Riders were: Ethel Allen, Helen Barnard, Betty & Lloyd Bissell, Billie Brown, Beth Bush, Ingrid Carmichael, Dora Harris, Margaret Hegberg, Marjorie Jackson, Rosella Jones, Virginia Kapsa, Dodie Leppman, Marie Loome, Norm Lumian, Rosemary Mason, Connie & Ed McIndoo, Muriel Parker, Virginia Prouty, Liz Reanier, Edna Robertson, Nancy Schreiner, June Smith, Nan Smith, Janet Speelman, Marian Tentinger, Louise Thurber, Cristy White and Bette Hack, leader.
