Trip Report

Our route: 1-5 past Roseburg, Hwy. 42 to Ten Mile and then over an array of confusing BLM back roads to our destination, The National Champion Douglas Fir. The hike itself is only about a half-mile through a magnificent old growth forest terminating at this awesome tree. It is 5-7,000 years old, 11.5 ft. in diameter and 329 ft. in height. It is a miracle that it has survived ax and fire. The Clatsop Fir, former champion, blew down in 1962. The long search for a replacement resulted in the discovery of the Doerner tree in 1991. Originally called "Brummitt", it was renamed to honor a dedicated BLM employee, Ray Doerner. We lunched at the trailhead - one large picnic table plus a vandal-proof privy building.

Our return was over some very curvy roads through Looking Glass to the nice Stewart Park on the South Umpqua. Then a photo stop at the heritage Elm Tree at the Douglas County Courthouse; next a stop at Winchester Dam to watch salmon trying to jump over the dam; and finally ice cream and browsing in historic Oakland. Our very good driver, Winston Kyser of Experience Oregon, returned us to Eugene at 5:15.
