Trip Report

This proved to be a most easy and enjoyable trip! Our party rendezvoused at the usual Eugene location and proceeded to the Green Lakes trailhead by way of Hwy. 58 and the Cascade Lakes Hwy. Gordon took advantage of the Charlton Lake cutoff to reduce the driving distance to 112 miles. Weather remained blessedly clear and dry throughout the trip, with a north wind moderating the 80° temperature. After a pre-climb invocation led by Elizabeth, and the usual USFS bureaucracy, we commenced our trek. Hiking time up to a 7,400-ft. base camp was 2½ hours. We filtered a trickle of melt water from a nearby snow patch, immediately below the west side summit scree fields. Overnight temperature was a comfortable (for those with sleeping bags) 44°, under a near full moon. We began the final assault up the Northwest Ridge around 6:00 a.m. Dan led the short pitch at the crux, just below the summit block. We rigged a rope here as a safety measure. However, its benefit proved largely psychological. All of us surmounted the crux unaided. Dan Hagen, Elizabeth Medgyesy, Gordon Sayre and Chris Miller (leader) all summited by 8:30. It was 48° on the summit but quite comfortable when resting in a sunny spot out of the wind. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch before starting down. Our descent was largely free of the usual torrent of dislodged rocks known to favor chasing climbers downhill on these Cascade volcanoes. We returned, unscathed, to Eugene a bit after 6:00 p.m. that same day.
