Trip Report

The group hiked in on Saturday morning from Frog Camp at Obsidian trailhead under overcast skies but moderate temperatures. We arrived at Arrowhead Lake around 2:30 p.m. and set up camp. That afternoon we reviewed crampon usage and self-arrest on an adjacent steep snow field just south of our campsite. The upper half of North and Middle Sisters were not visible all afternoon and as we finally turned in that evening we were concerned about visibility for summiting the next day. We awoke at 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning to clear skies and 30 degree temperatures. At 6:30 with crampons and ice axes we headed up the northwest slopes of Middle Sister to pass just to the west of the Dragon's Back and up the Renfrew Glacier. The traverse of the snow field on the north slope had good steps kicked in and we summited at 11:00 and were greeted on top by climbers summiting from the south side. Clear, sunny skies with no wind made the views from the top quite enjoyable. Everyone summited. Dan Hagen, Robin Badger, Peter Howlson and Dick Snyder, leader.
