Trip Report

After vicariously experiencing a 21,000-ft. climb at the previous potluck meeting, the potluckers on December 15 (as always, well nourished!) kept their feet at ground zero this evening, except perhaps for some foot tapping.

The entertainment was strictly musical, performed by The Old Time Fiddlers. They played Country Music on a variety of combinations of violins, guitar and mandolin and were accompanied by two vocalists (one senior and one very junior). The audience was encouraged to join the vocalists in a couple of the selections.

Being a city boy, permit me to quote from an encyclopædia (it’s not to be found in the Harvard Dictionary of Music): ". . . country music is tuneful, lyrical and often sentimental with an earthy, bouncy vitality that reveals its rural origins . . . deals with the concerns of daily life, love, religion, grinding poverty . . . humor and self deprecation are also found in the music". Some of these qualities were indeed apparent in the songs presented by this talented group.

The program ended with one for the season - "Silent Night", with Obsidians obligato. -Bep Fontana
