Trip Report

We departed V.R.C. parking lot in a very dense fog. The sun broke through shortly after we were on 1-5 heading for exit 162 down through Drain, Elkton and Scottsburg. Our first stop was the Scottsburg County Park for morning coffee and our first sighting of a myrtlewood grove. Our good fortune was with us for as we neared the Dean Creek Elk Interpretive Center many commented on very few seeing the elk at the viewing site. Lo and behold, there were lots of elk right at the viewing station! In Reedsport we found 19th Avenue, the China Bell Restaurant where we viewed the ceramic mural "The River Bend". We next stopped at a view point, only seeing the Umpqua Lighthouse in a light fog. We then exited Hwy. 101 just before North Bend heading east wandering our way through countryside, with Ewart’s narrative, to Golden and Silver Falls. We hiked to each of the falls and lunched. On our return trip back to Hwy. 101 we stopped at the Oregon Connection for a video and self-guided tour of their myrtlewood factory. Many had good ice cream too. The trailhead for the falls is a beautiful myrtlewood canopy spot. We retraced our steps back to Eugene by 6:00 p.m.
