Trip Report

A group of Obsidians and nonmembers gathered at the Lodge on Saturday, May 12 for a fun review of a serious topic, the fundamentals of glacier travel and crevasse rescue.

This was not a substitute for the usual two days of intensive work and instruction on snow, but it was a helpful review. It was also a reminder of the very real dangers of glacier travel.

Participants practiced basic knots, ascended ropes set up on the Lodge climbing wall using prusiks, and puzzled over the basic Z-pulley system for hauling a victim out of a crevasse.

Everyone left with more knowledge than they came with. Thanks to the Climb Committee for organizing this event and thanks to the trainers - John Pegg, Doug Nelson and George Baitinger.
