Trip Report

On May 27 eight eager climbers summited Mt. Shasta. Saturday we hiked up 3500 ft. through the nearly snowless Avalanche Gulch. The cloudless sky and magnificent views ate up our film. At Helen Lake (10,443 ft.) our four tents joined the 80-90 others in this city of tents. Early Sunday morning, the star-studded sky was on display. As we departed we watched the parade of lights on the headwall above us. The broad panoramas and bizarre ice formations beckoned us up the windy slopes. It took the group 5-6 hours to reach the 14,162 ft. summit. Here Gregg surprised Allison with a special anniversary present to celebrate their first ascent together. The descending glissades were treacherous at the top, fun in the middle and work below Helen Lake. All of us were tired and inspired as we looked back at the awesome peak. Making the climb were Nick & Bob Burnet, Allison & Gregg Hale, Mike Hawley, Dan Hagen, Steve Still (assistant leader) and leader Jim Pierce.
