Trip Report

After our morning break in Oakridge, we continued up Hwy. 58 on a cold, gray day over snowy and icy Willamette Pass. On the Crescent cut-off we passed the toe of the most recent lava flow in Oregon, as described by geologist Ewart Baldwin. Our main focus at the High desert Museum was the Raptors in the Sky, their latest development. Also, Obsidian Judy Dobell exhibited her rug hooking skills; her rug in progress is beautiful. Other displays, both inside and out, are excellent. Enjoying three hours at the museum, including lunch, we departed at 2:15 as the snow flurries resumed. The drive through Bend has been improved with the completion of the Bend Parkway. Following an ice cream stop in Sisters, we crossed the Santiam Pass. Again more snow so no view of the Cascade peaks, but the trees were beautiful, especially from the inside of a warm, comfortable bus. We were unable to do our scheduled stops at Salt Creek and Sahalie Falls. Driver Dick Johnson handled the 273 miles very efficiently, returning us home at 5:45.
