Trip Report

Though several people expressed interest in this trip, when the time came to leave we were down to two participants. We left town on a fine Friday afternoon and drove to the Diamond Rockpile trailhead, stopping for a meal in Oakridge along the way. The sun, dipping toward the horizon, colored the trees and slopes as we started our hike toward Marie Lake. The harvest moon was rising in the darkened sky when we arrived, traveling along the dimly lit trail without any assistance from artificial lights. Warm drinks and a balmy evening prepared us for our rest.

We rose early under the brilliant moon and were out of camp at 3:45 AM, hiking under the trees and up the slope of the south ridge, again using only the light provided by nature to find our way. We were high on the mountain by the time the sky began to lighten in the east and, bundled against the cool breeze, had the privilege of watching a fine sunrise/moonset from the summit.

We spent about an hour on the top, again sipping hot drinks, and enjoying a light breakfast, before heading back down. We were at the car by 10:00 and back in town by noon.
