Trip Report

Our tour of Virginia Gilbreath’s home in Dallas was a fabulous experience. This 1890 Victorian-style house is completely furnished with period antiques. Virginia’s life-time interest in antiques and the Victorian Age is beautifully expressed in her lovely home. Adding to this elegance, we enjoyed live piano music by Paul Beard, a talented professional and the son-in-law of Ethel Allen. Our appreciation to Virginia and Ethel for a memorable visit. We went to the nearby Dallas City Park where several of us walked through the Hunter Arboretum. We continued on back roads to Perydale, viewing nice farm country against the backdrop of the Coast Range.

In historic Lafayette at the Yamhill County Museum we ate our sack lunches inside their large two-story log cabin. Their second unit is the 1892 Polling Church where most of the displays were presented. And the third unit is an old barn containing many implements and tools. Twila Byrnes and her staff of volunteers were most hospitable.

We explored the Chehalem Valley (Ewing Young country), through Newburg to Champoeg Visitor Center for a 15-minute video which was about the events of 1843. Our return was in the French Prairie area via St. Paul. Driver Larry Edwards returned us to Eugene at 5:20 p.m.

Thirty-four riders included Ewart Baldwin, Louise Behnke, Ann Bullock, Ingrid Carmichael, Nicole Chase, Mary Lee Cheadle, Kent Christofferson, Mary Culver, Rosemary Etter, Margaret Fea, Virginia Fillingim, Bette Hack, Dora Harris, Evelyn Hile, Ben Kirk, Mary Ann Holser, Gloria Layden, Marilyn Lynch, Frances Newsom, Joyce Norman; Barbara & Don Payne, Liz Reanier, Edna Robertson, Nan Smith, Janet Speelman, Ida Sprague, Kay Warner, Janet Vaughn, Mary Ellen West, Connie & Floyd Wilson and leaders Ray Jensen & Ethel Allen.
