Trip Report

We had a great day away from the heat in Eugene. Leaving at 8:00 a.m., we arrived at Elkton about 9:15 at the Butterfly Pavilion, which is visible from the highway but has a long driveway to the building. We were warmly greeted and entered through the gift shop door and into a large airy room with several smaller rooms adjoining which contain the butterflies' habitat. Tour guides were immediately available, most of whom are students from the high school who are participating in the Elkton Community Education Center (ECEC), a nonprofit organization funded by grants, fund raisers, tuitions and individual and group donations. Coffee and lemonade were provided and our hospitality committee took charge of refreshments. A highlight was when many of our group were given the just hatched butterflies to carry in their closed hands to their home on the butterfly plants in the enclosed room where they would learn to fly. Everyone enjoyed a short walk through the outdoor gardens in full bloom, and we bought out the gift shop's supply of butterfly pins.

We left the Pavilion about 11:00 and drove the Umpqua Highway through Reedsport to Winchester Bay and the Lighthouse Park, where we had lunch. It was cool but very pleasant weather and after lunch we had a short tour to the Lighthouse Gallery gift shop (the museum was not open on Tuesday).

We arrived at 2:00 p.m. at the Discovery Center in Reedsport where we watched a video about sand dunes and toured the wonderful displays of early life in this tidewater town. We drove to Florence, stopping in Old Town for ice cream, and arrived home around 5:30.

Our driver was Larry Edwards - one of our favorite, friendly drivers who always gets us there and back safely and on time! Riders were: Ethel Allen, Pat Bitner, Kent Christoferson, Dora Harris, Ray Jensen, Rosella Jones, Ben Kirk, Gloria Layden, Rosemary Mason, Hal & Joyce Owen, Liz Reanier, Edna Robertson, Nancy Schreiner, Janet Speelman, Eurh Ann Watts, Vera Woolley, Ellen Zigler, Hawke Williams, Nola Shurtleff and Bette Hack (leader).
