Trip Report

Following our usual coffee break at the Santiam rest area, we traveled through Salem, crossing the Willamette river to Hwy. 221, then the Lafayette highway to the Evergreen Museum, arriving at 10:20 a.m.

We were impressed by the many well trained volunteers who were very helpful and attentive to our comforts all day. We began with a guided tour of the original air museum - the centerpiece being the SPRUCE GOOSE, along with many other vintage aircraft.

At 12 noon, we viewed "Wild Oceans 3-D" at their new IMAX theater - spectacular photography and our 3-D glasses involved us close to the action.

Lunch was at the COSMO CAFE (very good), located in the new Space Building, which is still a work in progress, with some exceptional exhibits such as the TITAN II Missile, the REDSTONE ROCKET, the SR-71 Blackbird, Apollo Mission hardware and much more. There was plenty of time after lunch for a self-guided tour of the new space facility, and also to browse, shop, and take a second look at anything of special interest.

Everything in this world class complex is FIRST CLASS - all very precise and well presented.

Departing at 2:45 p.m. we went south on HWY. 97 through Corvallis to Hazelnut Hill for ice cream and tasty confections. Most of us set outside to enjoy the view and the pleasant weather. Back to Shopko at 5:30 p.m. There were 21 riders, including one nonmember.

Riders were: Ethel Allen, Alice Anderson, Barbara Beard, Paul Beard, Paula Beard, MaryLee Cheadle, Sharon Cutsforth, Barbara Flanders, Dennis Flanders, Dora Harris, Ben Jeffries, Ray Jensen (leader), John McManigal, Lenore McManigal, Don Payne, Liz Reanier, Nola Shurtleff, Julie Snell, Dick Speelman and Janet Speelman; and guest Tom Shurtleff.
