Description:

This Obsidian bus trip will focus on the Junction City – Corvallis area. We will visit Camas Country Mill, the Arbuthnot Dairy Center at OSU, the OSU Food Science Department’s brew house & winery, Deck Family Farm and stop to sample Lochmead Dairy ice cream. Lunch (on your own) at New Morning Deli in Corvallis or brown bag at nearby park.
Along the way we will learn about grain milling; cheese, beer & wine production; healthy farm grown meats. All producers will have items for sale.

Trip Report

April 18 was a beautiful say to visit nearby Willamette Valley food producers. Our first stop was Camas Country Mill near Junction City. The mill produces flours, grains and beans from crops grown on the Hunton Family Farm. Tom Hunton shared information about locally produced grains and started up the mill to demonstrate the grain to flour process. Fresh carrot muffins made from Camas Country Mill flour added to the usual festive coffee break inside the mill.
On to OSU where Lisbeth Goddik, Food Science Depart-ment Professor, gave us a tour of the Arbuthnot Dairy Cen-ter where artisan cheeses are made. We were able to sample the OSU Beaver Classic cheeses which are sold from push carts at Beaver home games. We learned about the ongoing relationship of the Dairy Center with beginning and current Oregon cheese producers. Lisbeth took us to the nearby OSU brewhouse and winery, also part of the Food Science Department program.
Lunch was at the New Morning Bakery & Deli in down-town Corvallis. They have an amazing variety of soups, sal-ads, sandwiches and baked goods.
Touring back roads gave us a chance to enjoy the beauty of a Willamette Valley spring. On our way to the Deck Fam-ily Farm, we stopped at Dari Mart in Junction City for Lochmead ice cream. Lochmead Dairy is operated by four generations of the Gibson family. A Lochmead Dairy em-ployee came on the bus and gave an interesting talk on the Lochmead business history. Dari Mart stores are the major outlet for Lochmead dairy products, which are also sold in some other local grocery stores.
Our last stop was the Deck Family Farm west of Junction City. Owner John Deck gave us a very interesting tour of this large diversified organic farm. We learned about ways they rotate the animals around the fields to help with the fertilizing and working up the soil for future crops. John gave a very good presentation of organic farming practices. A special treat was seeing three families of newborn piglets and the very young Anatolian Shepherd puppies. The moth-er dog is trained to guard the 120+ farm chickens from pred-ators.
Many of us enjoyed bringing home products from the vari-ous food producers.
