Trip Report

It was a wet and windy weekend, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the students and instructors participating in the rock field session of the Basic Mountaineering class. The rock practice was at the Skinners Butte Columns. We had a couple of shelters set up to give people the opportunity to get out of the weather when things got really nasty, but mostly people practiced in whatever the weather was dishing out. Actually from the point of view of the learning experience, the opportunity to practice climbing and rappelling in bad weather is a good thing. Students practiced climbing on a fixed line, moving past any rock protection set along the way, and also practiced belaying each other on the wet rock. Rappelling on the wet rock proved to be particularly interesting with slick footing really reinforcing the need to have good foot position on the descent. It was a fun day despite the weather.
