Diamond Peak Graduation Climb

Description:

Rescheduled Diamond Peak climb up standard south ridge route. Open to anybody but with preference given to Obsidian Basic Climb School graduates. We will meet at South Eugene High school parking lot near theater at 5:45am to facilitate car pooling.

Trip Report

10 climbers drove to the pullout at the start of road 2149 to get ready for the possible onslaught of mosquitoes at the trail head further up the road. There is generally a huge difference in the amount of bugs due to a change in elevation. We all booted up, and got our packs ready to hit the trail as soon as we arrived at the trail head. As it turned out, the mosquitoes were there, but not swarming yet this season. We found continuous snow just past the start of the bush wacking section of the south west ridge climbers route. Our route this time took us a bit more to the east of the ridge where we enjoyed moderate slopes all the way to the false summit. I have never seen continuous snow the entire length of this ridge before, this late in the season. From the false summit to the true summit we also walked on snow the entire way. The summit was also half covered with snow. Leader treats at the summit were disappointing. I think we need to cover this topic in better depth in next years basic climb school!
