Trip Report

We met up with 3 city staffers, volunteers from the Churchill Area Neighbors, and the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) crew to help with trail construction and removal of scotch broom in Wild Iris Ridge. Each of the NCCC crew members led a small group of volunteers on different portions of the project. This day was unique not only for the variety of groups that we worked with but also for there being 2 work sessions one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

During the morning session Roberta, Pat, Autumn, Trenton, Bill, and Pat hiked in further into the area to work to remove scotchbroom using weed wrenches. During their work they saw a skink! Todd and Alex worked on a section of raised turnpike and dug a trench to lay a large culvert. Mark ran power-wheelbarrows to bring gravel up for surfacing the trail. Ron and I helped with the cutting of the trail.

During the afternoon session, after a wonderful pizza lunch, Todd continued to work on the section of raised turnpike. David, Dave, Laurie, Kathy, Tom, and Darko joined me to work cutting in the new trail. Quite impressively they did this after having hiked 8.9 miles on the Ridgeline before coming over to volunteer!

Unfortunately, the NCCC crew only has 2 more days to work on the project and it is unknown when the trail will be finished.
