Description:

Snow climb up Mt. Hoods South side starting from Timberline Lodge. Tentative plans: Summit via Old Chute route or Pearly Gates depending on conditions. Plan is to leave Eugene the evening of Friday May 13th and start climbing around 1am, summit (hopefully), and return to Eugene late Saturday afternoon (with a stop for Danni's traditional post-climb milkshake). If the weather does not look good for a Saturday summit, climb will likely be shifted to Sunday, May 15th so please leave your weekend plans open. Climbers should have taken climb school or equivalent, have basic roped team snow travel skills, good mental attitude, and physical endurance. Carpooling and rotating drivers for the drive back to Eugene after the climb is highly rrecommended.

Trip Report

This climb had originally been scheduled for Friday or Saturday but by Thursday morning it was obivious that the weather window was going to slam shut before the weekend. One climber proposed that we go Thursday night and, after some consideration, the leader decided that doing the climb on such short notice could actually work. After a flurry of calls, texts, and emails it turned out that all 6 of the folks who had signed up to do the climb could ditch work on Friday and go climbing. We opted to keep it simple. Just leave Eugene at 10:30pm Thursday night, drive to Timberline Lodge, and start climbing. The team made steady progress up to the Hogsback where 2 climbers made the tough decision to turn back. The remaining team of 4 roped up and headed for the Pearly Gates. The route was crowded and slow. We took a small side chute left of the gates and spent a few minutes on the windy summit. By then the Pearly Gates were less crowded so down the gates we went. The snow had softened up nicely and made for epic glissades on the decent. Thanks to Marge for assisting. Leader -Danni Harris
