Trip Report

The Redwood Extended trip was blessed with perfect weather and a perfect group to enjoy it. This trip had a significant number of members new to Extended Trips. Here’s hoping they go on many more!

A variety of the trails was accessible from the campsite at Elk Prairie State Campground. Big trees were the highlight. Many commented on how it felt to be immersed in the Redwood tree environment.

The first day, many hiked the James Irvine trail, some making a loop by returning on the Miners Ridge Trail. Others hiked out to Fern Canyon and the beach, extending the trip by several miles. The following day, Prairie Creek trail provided a riparian environment followed by the Rhododendron and other trails. A network of trails closer to camp provided up close and personal views of really big trees. The setting provided hikes of any length so everyone was able to hike the distance they wanted - sometimes more than wanted. Ruthy topped the maximum number of experiences to be had in one day by biking, hiking and driving to Fern Canyon.

The food was great prepared by each enthusiastic team, the campground quiet and the moon brilliant. Much was learned on the trip - how to take coin-operated showers, how large bear scat can be, how each Redwood tree is different, the morning light filtering through the trees.
