Description:

We'll be meeting at South Eugene High School, near 19th & Patterson with plans to leave AT 4:00 AM. If you sign up after 8/24: please email me directly at Kimberly.vanwinkle@gmail.com, subject: south sister.

We'll start from Devil's Lake trailhead; 6 miles each direction; trail starts in hemlock forest, transitions to an open plain, and then rock: be prepared for lots of sun exposure. With some flatter sections mixed in, overall the trail gets progressively steeper and looser: sturdy hiking boots with gaiters are required, trekking poles are a good idea. While not a technical climb, it is a challenging hike at times on loose rock and some mild exposure in the last mile to the false summit. There are plenty of places to hang out for a picnic and to rest at the top better fore heading back to the car(s). We'll stay within sight of one another with planned spots where we will all regroup.

Trip Report

Starting from the very busy Devil's Lake Trailhead, we joined in with a large number of other hikers to make the 6 mile journey to the summit. We made steady progress all day and enjoyed breath taking views at every switchback. All four in the group made it to the summit where we were rewarded with beautiful views of the summit glacier and as far north as Mt. Jefferson. The weather was pleasant, mild temperature, hardly a cloud in the sky, and the wind remained calm until we started descending. The trail was much quieter later in the day and the mountains turned red as we finished near sunset. We had a varied group from having a new trip leader to a long-time obsidian member, the company made this climb extra special. Completing the drive and climb made for a very long day; we left Eugene at 4:00am and returned at 10:30pm; 12 hours car-to-car.
