Trip Description: This classic Obsidian hike will take us up a 6 mile section of the PCT past South Mathieu Lake to Yapoah Crater, a large cinder cone. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an amazing view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake, one most unusual lakes in the area, partly formed by a lava dam. Each hiker MUST bring 2 liters of water to prevent dehydration and cramps.

Trip Report

At the trail head each hiker received a trail map and two geologic maps of the recent lava flows from sources near North Sister including Yapoah Crater, Collier Cone, and Four-In-One-Cone. We hiked up the PCT to South Mathieu Lake for a rest stop. The weather was cool and clear with a gentle breeze from the west. We continued south on the PCT toward Yapoah Crater, encountering several large patches of packed show, which we were able to cross safely. We had lunch on the west side of Yapoah. Three, including Rebecca Eastwood, Darko Sojak and Tom Rundle climbed the steep trail to the Yapoah summit. We had a spectacular view of the Cascades all the way to Mt. Adams. After lunch we compared the geologic maps of the area with what we were seeing on the landscape. We continued the loop to a break at North Mathieu Lake, where Rebecca and Barbara took a long, refreshing swim. Along the trail we noted colorful species of wildflowers and a number of tiny blue butterflies.
