Earth Day Spencer Butte Litter Pick Up

Let’s get ready for Earth Day and clean up the main trail to the summit. It should be a beautiful day for a hike to the top. We will start at the main lot cleaning the steps and work our way up with light raking and litter pick up -- especially for the first 1/2 mile. Last week six of us raked for two hours from Fox Hollow to the switchbacks before the steps. That makes it easier for us. I have made muffins and will have lemonade for our group. I recommend that you add a few extra miles and go down the trail to the 52nd trailhead. You would have to carry your rake but you probably won't have to use it. UPDATE about meeting place. Meet at the 52nd Willamette Trailhead so we can arrange the shuttle for those who want the longer hike option.

Trip Report

Next time I’ll bring sandwiches instead of muffins for our snack break on the summit. It took much longer than we thought to clean up the area around the main trailhead and to rake the first half mile. We were on top around 11:30 and after some minor confusion about a phone, keys and the car shuttle, we eventually regrouped in the now overflowing parking lot. We celebrated with cold lemonade and a gift of Earth Day shopping bags.
