Trip Report

We had no problems finding camping spots, but due to the great weather there were a lot more people than anticipated. It was fun to see so much elk up close and personal. A lot of bear tracks were noticed on the beach. Our hike south featured several redwood groves. Our hike to the north featured dramatic views. Campfires were allowed in designated camp sights, but wood is only allowed to be collected on the beach. We found abalone shells. The visitor center is an old pioneer home with a small museum worth checking out . The dirt road down to the trail head is very rough. 2 cars bottomed out on the way up. The permit system for backpacking is expensive . There is a fair amount of poison oak. The long drive to this area seemed worth it. "kudos" to Becky on her great driving skills to avoid the deer walking on to highway 101.
