Description:
Using two photographs - one from 1889 and a more modern image from 2004 - along with the Judge’s journal, we will try to locate “Camp Edith” at Waldo Lake.
From 1877 to 1907, Judge John Breckenridge Waldo explored and documented the Oregon Cascades. Today, he is commonly referred to as Oregon’s Muir or Thoreau, and he is credited with bringing awareness and protection to much of the Cascades. Waldo Lake, now named after him, was a favorite destination for the Judge. He camped on the south shore and named the site “Camp Edith” after his daughter. Time has erased the campsite, except for a tree that has the weathered remains of the camp’s name. Our hike today will try to locate this silent sentinel.
Meet at the Albertson’s (NE corner) on 30th and Hilyard for carpooling to the south shore of Waldo Lake. We will return by 6pm.
