Description:

Update about drivers on Wednesday afternoon: Brad can take 2 and I take 3 so I limited it to 7. We will pick up Ellen and Steve at Vida.
It is a two hour drive - Highway 22, past Santiam Y junction- 12.7 miles, and then left on Straight Creek Rd for 4.1 miles, gravel Rd 1168 for 3.8 miles, Rd 450 with immediate Coffin Mt. Lookout trailhead. It is 1.5 miles with elevation of 1020 ft. up to the lookout with beautiful views of mountains. Plan on a snack. Back at the trailhead, we will drive up Rd 1168 for .7 miles, park our cars, and walk 2 miles up to Bachelor Mountain, 1115 ft. We will have lunch at the top where we will can look down into the Coffin and have even better views of Mt. Jefferson. Both of these are ridge hikes with views and fall colors. This is like hiking up Pisgah twice.  Hopefully we will  be back at the cars around  3:30.  See directions and mileages in Sullivan’s Cascade hiking book.  I will substitute another hike if it is raining or trails are closed.

Trip Report

Fortunately we stopped at a viewpoint to take photos of the distant mountains since they quickly disappeared for the rest of the day. We had a light rain on Coffin Mountain but the Bachelor Mountain trek was dry. The brightest highlights were flame colored vine maple and huckleberry on the trail and slopes. Fortunately the leader’s car running low on gas made it to Rainbow with .3 gallons to spare. It was the first time for Doreen and George to hike the two mountains and they hope to return on a clear day. The views on the four to five hour hike are worth the two hour drive (100 miles).
