Description:

Guests are welcome! This is a great way to check out the Obsidian Lodge. Meet at the Masonic Cemetery, 26th and University, main gate. This is the 6th annual Groundhog Day Hike. Somehow we have enticed a groundhog to emerge. We will hike trails in the Cemetery, then for an uphill steady push on city streets past the Laurelwood Golf Course to the Ribbon Trail, Obsidian Lodge, Hendricks Park. We will loop back by 19th & Agate before we take a direct route back to our cars. Mileage will depend how many areas we explore in Hendricks Park and how long it takes to find the groundhog. Expect a grand display of snowdrops in the In the Cemetery. We may divide into two groups.
If the elevation or mileage is a problem, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net Perhaps we could meet up with you at the golf course.

Trip Report

It was 65 degrees! The curious groundhog was peeping out from a garden of snowdrops or was it spring snowflakes? No one was bamboozled by this furry creature. Violets, crocuses and Lenten roses added color to our 40 minute self-guided walking tour of the tombstones and the stories of the people buried there. We made our way up to the Obsidian Lodge where we sat by the Obsidian Sprit mural to celebrate the leader’s birthday with strawberry bread and cider. Jorry pointed out the whimsical figures in the mural. It was hard to leave but we pushed on to the Ribbon Trail and Hendricks Park. For many it was the first time to visit to travel the back trails and sites. The trip took 3 hours. The meeting place needs to better defined: “The Main Gate with interpretive signs at 25th and University.”
