  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 01/27/2018

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

Our walk will start at Espresso Roma (Near the Duck Store, on 13th between Alder & Kincaid). The walk will meander 3 miles through the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, making a halfway stop at the Market of Choice (former site of "Food King") for a bathroom break. We'll swing by the former location of the Delta Tau Chi house before returning to Espresso Roma. We should be back by 11:30.
The walk will cover at least fifteen locations utilized in the movie. We will not be stopping by Autzen Stadium (fifty years line scene), Cottage Grove (parade and Deathmobile scene), or Dexter (club scene).
Parking and bus lines are nearby Espresso Roma. If you have any personal experiences or stories about the filming of "Animal House" please bring them. We'll be covering some of the movie's history, trivia, fallout, how it's thought of in modern times, and how it changed Eugene.

Trip Report

In 1978 a low-budget movie about a misfit fraternity who challenged authority was released. The movie “Animal House” prominently featured locations around the University of Oregon. Much to the chagrin of university officials, the movie brought an unwelcome attention to the UO; to others it is one of the greatest comedy films of all time. Forty years later, this small group of Obsidians visited fifteen sites around campus featured in the movie. We enjoyed a pleasant walk in the light rain. Some areas on campus were similar while other locations, like a refurbished room 110 Fenton Hall where the courtroom scene was filmed, are somewhat unrecognizable. We ended our walk the former site of the Delta Tau Chi fraternity house, the Animal House. The dilapidated structure has since been demolished and replaced with an office building. Only a small plaque remains about its history from the 1800’s and uses in the movie. Thank you to everyone for sharing their stories about the movie’s production.
