Trip Report

One word describes today’s activity - WET. That being said, 8 hardy Obsidians showed up to snowshoe from the sno-park to Salt Creek Falls, and then on through the Diamond Creek Falls loop trail. The previous day brought about a foot of fresh snow on top of a nearly missing base layer. We started out with a temperature of 34 degrees with a misty light rain falling. Salt Creek Falls were as magnificent as ever as the falling mist turned into real rain. On we trudged, wishing the temperature would drop a few degrees and turn this wet mess into a mini blizzard - YES! But not to be - bummer. The snow along the trail was still pretty good for snowshoeing, being anywhere from a few inches to over a foot in many planes. With little to no base snow, we had several blowdowns and deadfalls to climb over or go around. The wetness kept others off the trail or at home, as we only came across a couple other snowshoers. We stopped at an overlook above Diamond Creek Falls to scarf down a quick lunch and marched on back to the cars to get out of this constant rain. We all made it back soggy but safely with this warning: be very careful near the cliffs as the snow can give way in huge sheets and take you down with it.
