Description:

This is a 40-mile backpacking trip along the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). This section begins at Yaquina Head and continues to the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.

On the first day we'll take the Amtrak to Albany then a regional bus to Newport. In town we'll collect some supplies then catch a city shuttle to the Yaquina Head Natural Area to explore and possibly tour the lighthouse. In the afternoon we walk the beach to Newport and over the bay bridge to South Beach State Park. We'll sleep in the hiker/biker camp.

On Day 2 we continue along the beach passing the Ona/Beaver Creek area to pitch our tents at the Seal Rock RV Park.

The morning of day 3 we get an early start and continue to Waldport then onto the Big Stump and overnight in the Beachside State Recreation Area in the hiker/biker camp. On day four we pass through Yachats and into the hills to the Cape Perpetua Lookout and Amanda's Trail, finishing up at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.

A return ride from Cape Perpetua to Eugene has been confirmed. All overnight areas have flush toilets and hot showers. The vast majority of the route is on sand or trail. About 8 miles includes walking on pavement; five miles of which is passing through towns, using park roads, and city streets, three miles will be at the side of Coast Hwy 101 mostly during bridge crossings. The two major bridges have enclosed pedestrian areas for crossing.

Cost will run approx. $80 per person for transit fares, camping fees and carpooling amount. Food is additional. On the first day will plan to eat dinner at Cafe Mundo in Newport. On the second night possibly at a Japanese restaurant in Seal Rock. Day three we'll eat in the hiker/biker camp so bring backpacking food. Additional details will be sent to participants.
